New Products, Changes to ManukaCare 18+

A couple of bits of news to keep you updated on.

We now have in stock (in store and online) the new Comvita Manuka Honey and Blackcurrant Elixir. This has been 'coming soon' for the past couple of months due to some shipping delays, but we now have it, just in time for the coldest part of winter.

Blackcurrants contain high levels of anthocyanins, an excellent source of healthy fruit flavonoids. Anthocyanins support the immune system and help maintain health and well-being. Combined with the known good properties of UMF manuka honey it gives you a good winter wellness elixir.

ManukaCare 18+

There are changes to the tubes used in this very popular wound care product. The previous tubes for this sterilised honey were 'positive flow' designed, to make it easier for the honey to flow out of the tube and onto your wound. Unfortunately this positive flow aspect sometimes work a little too well, with a squirt of honey coming out when some tubes were first opened.

Now the packaging has had a redesign, and the new tubes are somewhat shorter and fatter, and no longer 'positive flow'. This should leave no more surprise squirts of honey when they are first opened.

Comvita ManukaCare is
- first aid ready
- suitable for most wound types
- reduces the risk of infection from bacteria including MRSA

We have a small number of the original style tubes left, and these will be sold via our website first until stock runs out, when we will start sending out the new design. You can request the new design already by calling and placing an order via phone.

Simply use another sterile dressing of bandaging over top to hold it in place.

Oncology Dietitians

Today the British Dietetic Association Oncology Group held a study day in London around head and neck cancer.

We were invited along to have a stand providing information on manuka honey to the attending dieticians.

Talking to them, many already had quite a few patients who were taking manuka honey. They were keen to learn more between taking it internally and the specialist medical wound products for external use.

Being professionals they were also quite interested to know about the research side of things, and what supporting research and clinical trials had been done.

There is highlights of and links to some of research on our website in the manuka honey information section.

However we do also hold quite an extensive reference list of many of the studies that have been made around the world.

If you are a professional in the medical field and would like to know more about UMF® manuka honey, then please feel free to get in touch with us and ask any questions you have. You can do so via email from our website, or could make use of the forum there to ask as well. The research reference list can be provided on request.

New Candles now available

We've now added a wonderful new range of scented candles. They're in stock and available to you now.

Our physical shop, that was smelling good with all the honey already, now smells extra wonderful. If you're passing Southfields then stop by just to treat your nose.

So what are we doing stocking candles? Well there is a match with our honey theme in that several of them are manuka honey scented candles. And they are quality handcrafted candles from New Zealand, with unique iconic New Zealand scents. For example the fragrance of Pohutukawa, known as the New Zealand christmas tree for its bright red flowers at that time of year. Or kiwifruit, or the fresh forest smells from the Ponga - New Zealand's native silver fern.

There is also some very practical candles we're excited to offer you. The decongestion candle and rub is very unique in that you can first burn it, and allow the eucalyptus, lemon and honey scent to help you congested nose, and then afterwards once it has started to cool you can rub the natural wax on your chest - continuing the decongestion benefits.

Pleasure your nose (or help it if it is blocked). Take a look at these new candles here.

Comvita Olive Leaf Complex here

Although we've actually had it in our physical shop for a while, we're please to say we've now added the Comvita Olive Leaf Complex to The New Zealand Honey Shop website, so that everyone in the UK can order it.

OK, so we admit this is a little concession to Australia, where the olive leaf plantation for this is. And we are a 'New Zealand Honey Shop'. However as we do specialise in the Comvita range, and simple this is a very good product for you, it was an easy choice to add it to our website.

Comvita Olive Leaf Extract is special in that it is made from only fresh olive leaves, picked at dawn each day and quickly processed to retain all their natural goodness. No old dried, drivelled up leaves used here.

The result is an extract that contains more than 30 times the polyphenolic antioxidant activity of an equivalent amount of extra virgin olive oil, and with only natural high levels of oleuropein.

Comvita® Olive Leaf Complex does not contain any olive leaf extract powders or artificially boosted oleuropein products.

If you are wanting to stock up ahead of winter, then we offer you a '6 pack' of 6 x 500ml bottles too.

For those who may not like its taste, it also comes in peppermint flavour.

Honey Bee Hero - help save the bees

You may or may not know that in the past couple of years, around the world but particularly in the USA and Europe, honey bees have been suffering from massive loss in numbers. This is not just about honey, it is a serious problem that could easily affect everyone if not addressed. The bees' work as natural pollinators is still very vital for a lot of the food we all rely on, as well as maintaining the wider diversity of plants on the planet.

While there are some people taking good steps to help where they can in simple things like keeping a variety of flowers in their garden for bees to visit, and more people are starting to keep hives in urban areas, more still needs to be done.

In the UK, an 8 year old is doing their part to try and get British politicians to treat the issue more seriously.

They have set up their own blog, Honey Bee Hero, to gain support to show to their MP (Member of Parliament).

You can visit the blog here to add your support: http://honeybeehero.blogspot.com

Comvita founder turns 99

Aspirational found of Comvita Claude Strafford turns 99 this week - living proof of the value of bee related health products.

From having his first beehive in 1921, his lifelong commitment to products of good quality and purity remain a cornerstone of the Comvita philosophy now. And even though he 'retired' at age 95, he still keeps some involvement today. Not bad for someone who spent his childhood in and out of hospital, but was able to greatly improve his health by his discovery of products from the hive.

More Comvita products re-branded as Medihoney

As part of its strategy of aligning their main wound care products under the Medihoney brand, Comvita are making some changes to a few of their existing products.

This will see what were previously called Comvita Apinate Dressings now re-branded as Medihoney Apinate Dressings. These will also be in a larger pack of 5 (versus the previous 3 pack).

These will sit alongside the Derma Cream and Medihoney Wound Gel. Although the existing Comvita ManukaCare 18+ is expected to keep its same name for the UK market.

The New Zealand Honey Shop will keep listing many of these items under both categories - Manuka Honey and Medihoney - for the time being. And of course please feel free to give us a call, or send an email, with any questions you have over any of these name changes.

You can see the range of Medihoney branded products here.

Using the ManukaCare 18+

One of our most popular products is the Comvita ManukaCare 18+ - a tube of sterilised manuka honey for external wound use.

A few people contact us afterwards to complain that when they opened the tube, quite a lot of the honey gushed out of the tube, catching them by surprise.

This is actually a function of the packaging. It is a specially designed tube, called a positive flow tube. It is to enable the honey to come out easier, so you can concentrate on where you are putting it, now on squeezing so much. The downside is that there can be an initial spurt of the honey when the tube is first opened, and this does catch out a few people.

There has been a warning added to the packaging, on the end of the carton (where you open it), however this is still missed by some.

So just be a little prepared when you come to open a new tube, and don't try squeezing it at all (or holding too firmly) at the start.

It may be a little messy sometimes, but this sterilised ManukaCare 18+ is great for your wound, leg ulcer, and burn use.

There is also around 10-15% of people experience a stinging sensation when first applying it, but this generally subsides.

New Huni Skincare products added.

They're here. The new products in the Huni skincare range have arrived in our shop - yesterday actually, so are now on the shelf in store, and today have added them to our website.

You can see the full range of Huni skin care here

The new products in the range are:
All Day Hand and Nail cream
Intensive Hydrating Mask
Anytime Lip Treatment
Eye cream

There are also a couple of gift sets available too, which combine 4 of the moisturising and cleanser products. We have these in our store, but have to work out the practicalities of being able to post them out before adding them to the website - they are packaged up in a gift box.

We got to see these new Huni products a few weeks ago when visiting Comvita headquarters in New Zealand, and are now very proud to be one of the first to have them available in the UK.

If you haven't tried the Huni skincare range before, if you are in the UK, visit our website and send us a quick email, we do have a few sample sachets of the moisturisers that we can send out on request.

Visit to Comvita HQ in New Zealand

For the past two weeks a couple of us have been visiting New Zealand, and was a great opportunity to meet up with suppliers first hand.

Made a visit to the headquarters of Comvita at Paeangaroa, a little south of Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty. Was really good to chat with some people there, and get a glimpse of the actual processing of the manuka honey into jars (wasn't able to get too close as its all done in a proper hygienic environment).

Passed a some direct feedback from our customers with regard to the packaging of some products, mainly the round jars from the UMF20+ honey.

Was also interesting to have a look around their visitor centre, and see a few of the new products that we may be able to get here in the UK in future.

It all confirmed our reasons for stocking the Comvita manuka honey. They are focussed on being a quality health products company, with the emphasis on quality of product, rather than being a honey company trying to find ways to sell more honey.
